Zen Foto Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photography by Shin Yanagisawa from April 22 to May 20. This exhibition marks the release of a new book of Yanagisawa’s photographs “untitled”, published by roshin books.

Shin Yanagisawa (1936-2008) made his debut in 1958 in the Minolta Camera magazine “Rokkor”. In 1961 he suffered a severe bout of tuberculosis which lasted 18 months, after which he enthusiastically embarked on a career in photography for magazines.

In the ordinary places that he encountered on his travels he produced work of great originality, rather unlike any photographer before or since. In these landscapes Yanagisawa draws the viewer into the photograph with an unique sensibility, based on a detached sentiment and striking composition with an unusual sense of distance from the subject.

This exhibition will include 15 works drawn from the 1960s and 1970s, both vintage and modern prints. During his life, Yanagisawa’s photographs have been the subject of a mere 4 exhibitions with his will. This therefore represents a rare opportunity to see the prints of one of the Japanese masters of photography. We encourage you to come and view this remarkable work.
